Six Young Copts Face Blasphemy Charges Over TikTok

Rights groups say the arrests followed online complaints after a brief TikTok reenactment and demand the men's release.

Six young Christian men from Minya province in Egypt, including one minor, remain in detention after posting a TikTok video on October 4. The short clip reenacted a scene from a popular Egyptian comedy film depicting prisoners unfamiliar with Quranic prayers.

Authorities charged the young men with “exploiting” and “insulting” the Islamic religion. The video drew inciting comments and reports to police. The men were questioned on October 6 and held pending investigation.

Calls for Immediate Release

Alliance Defending Freedom International called for their immediate release and for the charges to be dropped. The organization noted that hundreds of similar videos circulate on the same platform and described the case as typical of discrimination against Egyptian Christians.

Unequal Burden on Egypt’s Copts

The detentions highlight the continuing pressure Coptic Christians face in Egypt under blasphemy and related statutes. Egypt is home to one of the oldest Christian communities in the Middle East. Alleged insults to Islam arising from social media posts frequently trigger swift security proceedings, often after online outrage and informal complaints to police—even when the material draws on popular culture already in wide circulation.

For the families of the six young men and for Christian communities in Minya, prolonged custody over a comedy sketch taken from a mainstream Egyptian film marks another episode in a long pattern of unequal treatment. One of those held is still a minor. Rights advocates continue to press for their freedom and for equal protection under the law, insisting that a humorous reenactment of a known film scene does not constitute extremism or blasphemy.
