Pope Leo XIV Sets World Mission Day 2027 Theme

Taken from St. Paul, the theme grounds mission in Christ’s love shown to the lonely, the poor, and the suffering. World Mission Day falls on Oct. 24.

On October 31, 2026, the Dicastery for Evangelization’s Section for the First Evangelization and the New Particular Churches announced the theme chosen by Pope Leo XIV for World Mission Day 2027: “The love of Christ sends us forth.”

The theme is taken from St. Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians. It stresses that the love of Christ, once received and lived, impels the baptized to proclaim the Gospel and to serve others—especially the lonely, the poor, and those who suffer. The announcement links the 2027 focus to the Holy Father’s message for World Mission Day 2026, which taught that if unity is the condition of mission, love is its essence.

Mission Born of Divine Love

The Church’s mission, the dicastery recalled, arises from God’s love revealed in Christ. It is nourished by personal encounter with him and takes concrete shape in fraternity, closeness, and service. Mission is therefore not primarily a program or a strategy, but a response of love that sends the faithful outward.

Pope Leo XIV’s full Message for World Mission Day 2027 is scheduled for publication early in 2027. That text is expected to guide catechesis, parish outreach, and missionary formation in dioceses and religious communities throughout the year.

The Role of the Pontifical Mission Societies

The four Pontifical Mission Societies continue to hold a central place in preparing the day. They foster missionary awareness among all the baptized and support young Churches through prayer, formation, and charitable aid. Their work underscores that every Christian shares responsibility for the Church’s universal mission.

World Mission Day 2027 will be celebrated on Sunday, October 24, 2027. Parishes, schools, and missionary institutes are invited to make the theme the heart of their preparation—prayer, formation, and works of charity that make the love of Christ visible.

In continuity with the Church’s constant teaching, the announcement places love at the center of evangelization: love received in the sacraments, love lived in communion, and love poured out in service to those most in need. The Holy Father’s choice of theme invites the faithful to rediscover mission as the natural fruit of life in Christ.
