Pope Leo XIV Confirms November Trip to Latin America
Recovering favorably from October 13 surgery, he looks with joy to Peru and the Latin American lands that shaped his life.
The Holy See Press Office has confirmed that Pope Leo XIV will proceed with his November pastoral visit to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru. The Holy Father’s recovery from lung cancer surgery performed on October 13 continues to progress favorably, with no contraindications for the demanding 12-day journey ahead.
That journey will involve multiple flights and helicopter rides. Vatican doctors, including Dr. Luigi Carbone, affirmed that Pope Leo XIV is following medical recommendations diligently. The itinerary remains unchanged from the previously published program, allowing the local Churches to continue their preparations on a firm calendar.
Pope Leo XIV expressed personal joy at returning to Latin America, where he has lived significant portions of his life, particularly in Peru. “It fills me with joy,” he said of the prospect.
A Pastoral Mission of Communion
The visit aims to strengthen communion with the local Churches, encourage the faithful in their mission, and bring a message of faith, hope, and peace. For Catholic communities in the three countries, the coming of the Successor of Peter is an occasion to deepen their bond with the See of Peter and to receive encouragement in their Christian witness.
The confirmation underscores both the Holy Father’s resolve to fulfill this apostolic commitment and the care taken to protect his health as he resumes intensive international travel so soon after surgery.
Stops in Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru
In Uruguay, Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to visit Montevideo, Paysandú, and Florida. In Argentina, the program includes Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Luján. In Peru, he will travel to Lima, Chiclayo, Cusco, and Pucallpa.
The breadth of the route reflects a desire for genuine encounter with bishops, clergy, religious, and laity across varied regions. With medical clearance secured and the published program intact, the Churches of Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru can now welcome the Holy Father in November with full confidence in the plan.
