Pope Leo Affirms Marriage's Unbreakable Oneness

Returning after lung surgery, he rooted marriage in Trinitarian love and told civil leaders protecting it is more urgent than ever.

Pope Leo XIV returned to St. Peter's Square on October 21 for his first general audience since leaving Gemelli Hospital, and he turned at once to marriage and the family.

Discharged on October 17 following lung surgery, the Holy Father resumed the series of catecheses he had been offering on the documents of the Second Vatican Council. That week he focused on *Gaudium et Spes*, nos. 47–52, the section of the Pastoral Constitution that treats marriage and the family in the modern world.

From the opening of his address, Pope Leo XIV affirmed that the well-being of society is intimately linked to the healthy condition of marriage and the family. Conjugal love, he taught, is an intimate partnership of life and love. It reflects Trinitarian life and calls spouses to a mutual self-giving that goes beyond mere physical attraction.

Fidelity, Children, and the Common Good

That gift of self, the Pope stated, “underlies the requirement for ‘total fidelity’ and the ‘unbreakable oneness’ of the spouses.” The same self-giving finds vivid expression in the procreation and upbringing of children. Marriage, in the teaching he took up from the Council, is not closed in on the couple alone; it is ordered to new life and to the formation of the next generation.

Pope Leo XIV then addressed those who carry social responsibilities, especially in the spheres of politics and culture. He urged them to “work efficiently for the welfare of marriage and the family,” and he insisted that the task was “more urgent than ever before.” In a time of widespread fragility in domestic life, the Successor of Peter placed the protection of the conjugal bond among the first duties of public authority and cultural leaders.

Life Guarded From Conception

In the same catechesis, the Holy Father reaffirmed the Second Vatican Council’s condemnation of abortion and of infanticide. Human life, he stressed, must be guarded with the greatest care from the moment of conception. The defense of the family and the defense of the child at life’s beginning stand together in the teaching he proposed to the faithful gathered in the square and to the wider Church.

The October 21 audience followed a recent Vatican meeting on the implementation of *Amoris Laetitia*. By returning so directly to *Gaudium et Spes*, Pope Leo XIV set current pastoral initiatives within the permanent doctrine of the Church on the covenant of marriage, the unbreakable bond of spouses, and the sacredness of every human life from its beginning.
