No Human Right to Abortion, Vienna Bishop Declares
More than 3,000 marched in Vienna under the motto 'Austria is for Life.' Cardinal Müller warned against ideologies that judge which lives are worth living.
More than 3,000 people took part in the Vienna March for Life on Saturday, October 10, 2026, under the motto “Austria is for Life!,” organizers said. The nonpartisan association Verein Marsch fürs Leben staged the annual gathering in the Austrian capital.
The day began with Mass at 11 a.m. at the Karlskirche. Auxiliary Bishop Stephan Turnovszky of Vienna was the principal celebrant, joined by Bishop Klaus Küng, emeritus of St. Pölten.
During the Mass, Bishop Turnovszky stated: “There is no human right to abortion. It is a contradiction in itself.” He said women abort “not out of carelessness, but out of lack of prospects. Often also because men do not assume their responsibility.” Pro-life efforts, he added, must also protect “the weakest at the end of life” against euthanasia.
Rally, Speeches, and Procession
A rally followed at Karlsplatz. Speakers included Ricarda Berger, a National Council member of the FPÖ, who said, “A child must never be a problem or poverty risk”; Petra Plonner of fairändern; and Barbara Seppi of Haus der guten Hoffnung. ÖVP members of parliament Gudrun Kugler and Norbert Sieber were present.
Participants then processed through central Vienna to a closing rally at Stephansplatz.
Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller sent a video message stressing the “inviolable dignity” of every human life from conception to natural death. He warned against ideologies that decide “which life is worth living.”
Buffer Zones and a Peaceful March
Spokeswoman Anna Soldo criticized planned government “censorship zones,” or buffer zones, around abortion facilities as “a disproportionate infringement on the fundamental rights to freedom of expression, religion, and assembly,” noting that existing laws already suffice.
The event was largely peaceful, with minimal counter-demonstrations, unlike prior years. It took place under heightened security after a 2025 bomb threat that led the Cobra unit to evacuate the Karlskirche.
Bishop Turnovszky, born June 21, 1964, in Lucerne, Switzerland, and ordained in 1998, has served as auxiliary bishop of Vienna since 2008. Organizers announced the next March for Life for October 9, 2027.
