Gunmen Kill Pastor, Abduct Dozens at Nigerian Church
Security forces have launched a bush search after the Oct. 14 raid; families still await news of the captives.
Five armed men stormed the Apostolic Church of Christ in the Ilejemeje local government area of Ekiti State on the night of October 14, 2026, opening fire during a special prayer program, killing the pastor and abducting dozens of worshipers.
The congregation had gathered for evening prayer when the gunmen struck. Accounts differ on the hour, placing the assault at about 8:30 p.m. or 10:30 p.m. local time. The attackers fatally shot the pastor and carried off at least 40 members of the flock. Church sources and local authorities confirmed both the killing and the mass abduction.
Ilejemeje chairman Pius Alaba and Ekiti State Police spokesperson Sunday Abutu verified the incident. The Ekiti State government condemned the raid as “heinous and unacceptable” and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
Manhunt Across the Bush
In the hours after the attack, security forces launched a coordinated response. Police, army units, the Amotekun Corps, and local vigilantes opened a manhunt and bush-combing operation to free those taken captive and to apprehend the perpetrators.
Immediately after the raid, authorities had received no information on the whereabouts of the abducted worshipers. The kidnappers had not issued public demands. Families and the wider community in Ilejemeje remained without word on the fate of those seized at prayer.
The sudden seizure of an entire evening congregation highlights the exposure of Christian assemblies in areas where armed bands still move with little fear of immediate capture.
A Familiar Pattern of Church Attacks
The bloodshed in Ekiti State does not stand alone. It follows a repeated pattern of church raids and abductions targeting Christian communities in Nigeria. Places of worship, prayer gatherings, and clergy have been struck with lethal force in multiple regions, leaving pastors dead and parishioners missing or displaced.
Violence against believers in Nigeria remains extreme by the measure of recent global assessments of Christian persecution. For the faithful who continue to gather under such threat, the night of October 14 left a pastor killed in the exercise of his ministry and dozens of brothers and sisters carried into the bush.
Security forces continue their search. No confirmation has yet emerged of rescues or arrests.
