Bishop Orders Reparation After Eucharistic Sacrilege

Intruders scattered the Blessed Sacrament in M'lang on Oct. 25; Masses in the main church are suspended until the Oct. 31 rite.

Unidentified intruders broke into the tabernacle of St. Teresita of the Child Jesus Parish in M'lang, Cotabato, on Oct. 25, scattering consecrated hosts and wine across the sanctuary floor. The sacrilege struck at the heart of Catholic worship: the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.

Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo of the Diocese of Kidapawan described the desecration as a direct assault on that presence. He ordered all Masses and sacramental celebrations inside the main church suspended until a formal Penitential Rite and Mass of Reparation are celebrated.

The bishop will preside at the Mass of Reparation at 5 p.m. on Oct. 31. After the liturgy, the church, the altar, and a new tabernacle will be blessed and restored to sacred use.

Prayer, Fasting, and a Return to the Altar

Weekday Masses have not stopped. They continue at the parish formation house, so the faithful of M'lang can still receive the sacraments while the main church remains closed for the required rites.

Parish leaders called on Catholics to answer the outrage with prayer, fasting, and penance, and to seek the conversion of those responsible. They urged the community to reject hatred and to meet the sacrilege with renewed devotion to the Blessed Sacrament—the mystery that was profaned.

Local authorities are investigating the break-in. The intruders have not been publicly identified.

The Church treats the desecration of consecrated hosts with particular gravity. Rites of reparation exist so that the faithful may publicly confess their faith in Christ's true presence under the species of bread and wine and make amends before the altar is used again. By suspending celebrations in the violated church until that rite is complete, Bishop Bagaforo has placed penance, blessing, and a return to the Mass at the center of the diocese's response.
