Barron Rebukes Vesco on the Church's Call to Convert

A viral post on the Great Commission collides with the Algerian cardinal’s words on fraternity, context, and what evangelization is not.

On October 29, 2026, Bishop Robert Barron of Winona‑Rochester posted a sharp response on X to remarks attributed to Cardinal Jean‑Paul Vesco, Archbishop of Algiers. Barron targeted two lines: that "the Church is not there to convert," and that Christians should approach other religions through fraternity rather than seeking conversions.

"Excuse me, but…what?" Barron wrote, citing Matthew 28:19—"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations"—and adding, "Sure sounds like conversion to me." He then quoted 1 Corinthians 9:16 and concluded: "If I really thought that the Church does not exist to bring people to Christ, then I would resign and get an honest job." The post drew more than 600,000 views. Barron leads Word on Fire and has more than five million followers.

Context of the Algerian Interview

The first quotation comes from an interview conducted September 25 at the Dominican convent in Brussels by journalist Christophe Herinckx. Speaking of the Church in Algeria, Cardinal Vesco said: "Not a proselytizing Church, not a Church that is there to convert, but a Church that aspires to be one of the constituent parts of this people."

Stripped of that local setting, the sentence can read as a challenge to the universal Church’s evangelizing mission—something Vesco was not addressing in the interview. The second quotation does not appear in the interview; its wording circulated online before Barron’s post.

On Christian‑Muslim relations, Vesco said: "Christians have a different card to play than restoring a regime of Christendom… the wager to be made is on fraternity. In the monotheistic religions, proselytism is a poison because it implies considering the other person’s religion to be false."

Evangelization, Conversion, Proselytism

Herinckx later argued that critics tend to confuse evangelizing and converting, evangelization and proselytism. "They are not the same thing," he said, adding, "one converts oneself, not others!" and that fraternity "is prophetic, which is what Cardinal Vesco explicitly says."

The episode lays bare a tension familiar across the Catholic world: fidelity to Christ’s mandate to make disciples of all nations, and the pastoral reality of a tiny Church living as a minority amid other monotheistic faiths. Barron’s intervention insists that the Church’s reason for being is to lead people to Christ. Vesco’s defenders insist his words described Algeria’s concrete situation, not a denial of the Church’s missionary nature. The two claims are not automatically identical; the online framing made them sound so.
