Archbishop Seeks Testimony for Nyerere's Cause
Twenty-seven years after his death, Nyerere stands at the witness stage of a cause opened under Benedict XVI.
Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Ruwa'ichi of Dar es Salaam released a video on October 14, 2026, the 27th anniversary of Nyerere's death. The former president of Tanzania died in 1999; in the video, his archbishop called on the faithful to support the ongoing diocesan inquiry by providing testimony about Nyerere's life, faith, and virtues.
The appeal invites accounts supporting the beatification cause as well as accounts that raise concerns. Opened in 2005 and later transferred to the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam, the cause has reached the stage of witness interrogation—the phase in which the Church hears those who can speak to the candidate's life and reputation for holiness.
From Servant of God Toward Sainthood
Pope Benedict XVI declared Nyerere a Servant of God in 2005. He is presented as a model of humility, integrity, and Christian leadership. That presentation must now be tested by testimony. If the requirements are met, he may be declared Venerable; beatification and canonization would follow only afterward, according to the norms of the Church.
Prayer and Witness Across Tanzania
On October 11, Bishop Lazarus Vitalis Msimbe of Morogoro urged the faithful to intensify their prayers for the cause. Coming just days before the anniversary, that call prepared the ground for Archbishop Ruwa'ichi's more specific request: not only prayer, but concrete witness.
The diocesan inquiry cannot advance without the people who remember. By releasing his video on the anniversary, the Archbishop of Dar es Salaam tied the memory of Nyerere's death to the living duty of the faithful in the cause of his possible sainthood.
